Director Chris Columbus was having second thoughts about coming to Vancouver to make the high-school comedy I Love You, Beth Cooper, worrying that the movie would be a step backwards.

That's when he realized he was taking himself way too seriously. Columbus's first feature was 1987's Adventures in Babysitting, and after that came the hugely successful Home Alone in 1990. He was responsible for launching the dark, logistically complicated Harry Potter film series, and adapted the musical Rent for the screen, after which the Beth Cooper script came along.
